I write to ask for your help in contacting as many past & present Marr College pupils, and concerned Troon residents, with news of plans by South Ayrshire Council for the future of the school.
SAC is proposing to build a new Marr College and has identified the school playing fields as the most suitable location, which I and many others feel should not be allowed to happen for many, many reasons, not least of all the loss of up to 50% of some of the finest recreational sports fields in the country. A group of concerned past pupils is campaigning to have the new facilities built on the existing school location using the original iconic Marr College as the centre-piece and also to enhance the playing fields into a state of the art sports facility for both school and community use.
We are undertaking a number of different strategies to facilitate this campaign, one of which has been the creation of a Facebook group entitled Marr College - A New Beginning based on Old Surroundings. In the 36 hours since its inception, it has attracted 500 members in support of keeping the old building and developing the sites as mentioned above.
We would be very grateful if you would post a link to this Facebook group somewhere prominent on your site so that as many former Marr College pupils as possible become aware of the issue and join the group... clearly the greater amount of support we can achieve, the bigger the stick we have to shake at the Council.
If you have any questions, please contact me and I hope we can count on your help and support to develop Marr College into a 21st Century school without losing the heritage and traditions which make it such a special school.
