Opportunities In Retirement (O.I.R.)


The aim of the association is to harness the wealth of knowledge in the 50+ age group of retired people and to pass this knowledge to others through activity and interest groups.

Our current programme runs from September to December 2010 in Portland Church Hall, 2pm. Membership Fee of £10 includes all activities except Lawn Tennis and Badminton.

The decision of your fitness lies with yourself in conjunction with any medical advice that you might wish to take. It is your responsibility to ensure your personal safety and that of your belongings.

Enjoyable Activities to exercise your mind and body!

ART - This group work on drawing, sketching and painting in water colours, oils and acrylics. They meet every Wednesday morning at 9.45am in the Committee Room at Portland Church. Leader Jack Reid Tel. 313767 Commences 15.9.10

KEEP FIT (mixed) - Men and women exercise in leisurely fashion. Work out within your own capabilities under the guidance of an experienced instructor. Meet every Wednesday afternoon at 3.30pm in the large hall at Portland Church. Instructor Margaret Robertson Tel. 311440 Commences 22.9.10

LAWN TENNIS - This group is affiliated to Troon lawn tennis Club. Meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10 am all year round. Leader Kennedy Howden Tel. 314143

SHORT TENNIS & TABLE TENNIS - Both reasonably active games. Short tennis is played with a soft sponge ball, generally in foursomes because there is only one court. We have two table tennis tables. SCRABBLE - This group meets on Thursdays at 9.45am in the committee room of Portland Church. Leader Gordon McLennan Tel. 561098 Commences 16.9.09

WALKING - This group is divided into short walks and long walks. Both start from the Walker Hall car park. Short walks leave at10.00am every Wednesday all year round. Contact Anne Melrose. Longer Walks leave at 9.45am every Tuesday September to May Leader Alex Williamson Tel. 313905. Commences 14.9.10

BADMINTON - Muirhead Activity Centre 10.30 to 12.30pm every Friday. Racquets available, court fee payable. Leader Ronnie Steele Tel 01563 850181 Commences 3.9.10

SWIMMING - Troon Pool reserved for seniors all year round Monday 12 noon to 12.45, Friday 9 to 9.45am. Reduced admission charge. Leader Alan Calderwood Tel 311668
